AV News 180 - May 2010
We're given the opportunity to view and listen to several of their masterful
pieces of work and having been born in the Valleys and my mothers family all
involved in the mining industry, I found their showing of "The Merthyr"
particularly poignant. A snappy little piece by Linda lulled me into a false sense
of security before I grasped it was "Refreshment time" ho ho !!!
Finally a skill-full and detailed introduction to multi-track recording with
Audition 3, utilising typical sounds from the countryside, was chopped, pushed,
pulled and edited into a fantastic opening sequence, when combined with the
view of a farmyard and a brilliant cacophony of sound.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable day and I look forward with more
enthusiastic vigour to the next, but of course I'm left with the usual dilemma of
buying yet more expensive electronic gadgets as well as working with
something for nothing (Audacity) or a very powerful expensive bit of gear
(Adobe Audition 3), when I neither have deep pockets or experience. Oh dear
will I get my 7D.
Rita - So if you want to learn more about AV and have a fun day in, when the
weather is cold, come along this next November (and February 2011) and bring
your sequences.
Sharing other people's ideas will spur you on to higher things I'm sure.
Getting Creative With AV's
Mold Camera Club, North Wales
Over the past year or so the use of AV’s within the club has grown quite
considerably and it was great to have Jill K. Bunting CPAGB come and talk to
us on 1st March on the subject of Creative Ideas. Jill, who is co-editor of the AV
News magazine, has been involved in the AV world for some time and the
chance to attend a lecture, as she shared some of her secrets, was not to be
missed. Jill opened up her talk by saying that AV’s are more than just pictures
to music and that there is a great deal of creativity involved in producing a good
quality AV. As the evening went on Jill discussed the many issues around AV
making including Licensing, Software, Music Editing, Blending Images, Version
Control, File Management, Special Effects, Sound Effects and Titles. Jill also
gave us a demonstration on how to use Photoshop to ensure that images fit
together by layering the images and then using the opacity to allow you to
simulate how they would blend. This of course then gives you the opportunity
to then save individual layers so they are perfectly positioned for the AV.
It wasn’t all lecture and we were shown a number of Jill’s finished AV’s which
were of very high quality. Finally we were given an insight into animation with
Jill’s now infamous butterfly. Seeing that butterfly flap it’s wings as it crosses
the screen is just amazing. Animation may not be for everybody but if you are
interested in creating animated style AV’s then you can’t go wrong by following
Jill’s advice. It turned out to be another great evening at the club.
We look forward to the practical AV night, which by all accounts sounds like
it is going to be fun to get involved. Some of us attended a similar event at the
NWAWAVG in February and what a day we had. (See Page 32)
