AV News 189 - August 2012 Chairman's Chatter Keith Scott FRPS Although summer is traditionally the quietest time for many AV workers it is nonetheless a very busy time for those involved organising and running major AV festivals and other events, the imminent RPS Internationals for example. Much of this work is done behind the scenes over a very long period of time to ensure that such events run like clockwork. One very important task requires organisers to negotiate with management at each venue to obtain the best possible deal including meals and accommodation. The difficulty of this task shouldn't be underestimated, it's quite an onerous undertaking and isn't readily appreciated by those not directly involved. Management at suitable venues are under considerable pressure, they struggle to remain profitable and in some instances struggle just to keep their heads above water due to ever increasing overheads and running costs. Next time you grumble about the cost of booking your place at a major festival consider this; without the dedication of a team negotiating steadfastly on your behalf such events would cost considerably more.
