AV News 189 - August 2012
Nothing now but await the fateful day. For some reason I had not expected to
hear the result until the Saturday of the assessment week, but Tuesday night
and there it was 'RPS ASSESSMENT' boldly sitting in my inbox. My finger
hovered then CLICK, my eyes searched the words and fixed on the crushing
word 'NOT' recommended for Associateship. I must admit I had not expected to
feel quite so disappointed. Oh well, C'est la vie.
As the weekend approached I was surprised to receive a telephone call from
the Assessment panel Chairman. Commiseration was expressed at the failure
of my application and an explanation of the criteria used for the decision. The
panel had enjoyed the stories, the narrations and productions but it had failed at
the last hurdle, the photography was not of sufficient standard. Photographic
standard will now be one of the main criteria for success. However it was felt that
my submission was above the standard required for LRPS and the Board had
decided to offer me this distinction.
So there you are, Raymond Hughes LRPS.
Obviously my next step was to
review my two sequences and I
must admit that with 'Patrick' there
may have been a point with regard
to the quality of some images. I
was less sure when it came to 'This
land' and here I had more difficulty
in seeing what the problem was. It
was suggested in the written
summary I later received that the
images had failed when projected
but I have seen the sequence
projected on a 14 foot screen
seemingly problem free.
This leaves the question of what standard of photography is going to be
required when I inevitably try again for my Associateship.
I would suggest that
the standard in a
70/80
image
AV
sequence will never
match the 15 images
assembled for a Photo
Associateship.
That point aside I
appreciate the time
taken by the panel to
convey their thoughts
to me, also the
encouragement to try
again and of course
the award of my LRPS.
