The Bernina Express carriages have panoramic windows allowing passengers to admire the view from the lakes and meadows to the highest peaks and glaciers. The track navigates 360-degree revolutions, tackling dramatic changes in altitudes, and disappearing into the rock faces of mountains. The route is covered by a coach from Tirano to Lugano. The Bernina Express journey is the focal point of this holiday, which is preceded by a night in Zurich and followed by a stay in Lugano at the end of the holiday. Spanning the most south-easterly point of Switzerland, the Bernina Express takes you south via train through the canton of Grisons into Italy, past glaciers, mountains, and marvels of railway engineering. You pass through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. Highlights include the Landwasser Viaduct, Lago Bianco at 2,253 metres above sea level, Alp Gruem and the Brusio Circular Viaduct. Then, the Bernina Express coach takes you west by road past Lake Como, the vineyards of the Valtellina, and back into Switzerland to Lugano.
