Five pillars that can
save thousands of
lives on our roads
I
Road traffic crashes take the
lives of nearly 1.3 million
people globally every year,
and injure 20-50 million
more. Indeed, road traffic inju-
ries have become the leading
cause of death for people aged
15-29 years.
Kenya has been losing an
average of 3,000 lives annually,
placing it among the countries
with the highest number of
road traffic crashes globally.
This number could be grossly
understated however, because
while international best practice
measures fatalities within 30
days of the accident, Kenya
records only the fatalities that
occur instantly at the accident
scene. Indeed, some estimates
of road crash fatalities suggest
a figure nearer 12,000, once you
include victims who succumb
to injuries after they have been
removed from the scene of
the accident. Of the recorded
fatalities, the majority are aged
20-44 years, which is the most
productive segment of the
population, with a peak of those
aged 30-44 years.

ficially proclaimed The Decade
of Action for Road Safety
2011-2020, with its goal being to
stabilize and reduce the forecast
level of rad traffic deaths around
the world.
Toward this objective, the
United Nations Road Safety Col-
laboration (UNRSC) developed
the Global Plan for the Decade
of Action for Road Safety 2011-
2020, featuring the following 5
Pillars of activity;
Pillar 1 – Road Safety Manage-
ment, which focuses on the
need to strengthen institu-
tional capacity to further
national road safety efforts.
Pillar 2 – Safer Roads and Mo-
bility, which highlights the
need to improve the safety
of road networks for the
benefit of all road users.
Pillar 3 – Safer Vehicles, ad-
dressing the need for
improved vehicle safety by
encouraging harmonization
of relevant global standards
and mechanisms to ac-
celerate the uptake of new
technologies that impact on
safety.
Pillar 4 – Safer Road Users,
which focuses on develop-
ing comprehensive pro-
grammes to improve road
user behaviour.
Pillar 5 – Post-crash Response.
This promotes the improve-
ment of health and other
systems to provide appro-
priate emergency treatment
and longer-term rehabilita-
tion of crash victims.
Against this backdrop, the
AA of Kenya has adopted
Road Safety as a key plank of
its overarching strategy, as we
look towards the future and our
