• Uneven patterns of intellectual functioning
Autistic individuals are generally good at some sector of
their skills, this could be drawing, music, computations
in math, or memorisation of facts. On the other hand,
the majority of autistic persons have varying degree of
academic understanding with only 20 percent having
average or above average intelligence. In a school or
institution there are outstanding students followed by
mediocre and below average. Keeping in mind talking
academically it’s not necessary that Outstanding students
might be as good in sketching as they are in maths and
below average might be bad in sports as compared to
language. Keeping academics as the only bar to judge a
person’s mental ability is like comparing fish and monkey
on their ability to climb a try. In Finland their education is not
segregated on the basis of subjects which gives students
freedom to pursue whatever they want and do what they
love. If only we compare people with same interest then
only we can actually see who is excelling. Someone who
might be getting 99 percent in school might not do great
at his work and someone who might be getting 50 percent
might be CEO of some other company. But we don’t call
all the people who don’t excel in their field Autistic.
• Marked Restrictions of activities and interests
A person with Autism tend to perform things in repetitive
manner like doing something regularly by maybe following
the same route to go to some place, to dress up in same
manner and keep on going to same kind of schedule
almost everyday. They experience a little distress if there
is some kind of change in their routine. We all have some
kind of routine set for our day to day life and sometimes we
also get so used to that, that our subconscious mind starts
doing things because it has got used to it. Like someone
who is filling up water bottles every night for the day to
come might not actually remember how many bottles
have been filled with water until they are in front of that
person to count. One might not always stay responsive
enough to do something that our subconscious mind
gets comfortable doing. But if our subconscious mind
is helping us in our routine are we Autistic? People tend
to take the same route to work everyday and they get
so used to that routine that they just take turns without
realising that they are taking turns. If one day due to
some reason that person cannot take the same route to
work they at times make a mistake by taking the same
turns and making a detour to which they get irritated but
that’s what their subconscious mind is telling them to do.
That’s what cause distress to them but still they are not
called Autistic. We develop habits too, some of them are
unconscious actions we just cannot control like biting
nails, shaking legs, tapping feet and many more. Still we
are all termed as typical and people who are relatable, still
we are not called Autistics.
There have been a lot of places where readers can relate it
to their day to day lives. After all we are not all that different
as we expected. Medically science tells us that there has
to be certain no of symptoms and we should qualify to
those symptoms and conditions to be called Autistic but
speaking psychologically by few of many factors stated
above it will be conclusive to say that everyone is Autistic
at different levels.
