was directed at me . I was frozen , I felt like I couldn ’ t say any words , and if I did they would come out with no rhyme or reason , and definitely without control .
I remember hearing , just before I got up to leave : “ Bleach therapy can cure anything , Katie ; don ’ t you want to cure Avery ?”
This was the day I got included and invited to a mom ’ s tea . The day I thought I was about to make mom friends was the same day I learned about the underground , hidden world of bleach and autism . It will haunt me forever .
The next day , I gained the courage to find my voice and use it to share my story . I wanted Avery to leave “ the hard ”, but I never wanted that to happen through bleach therapy . I never again got invited to a mom ’ s tea . It is crystal clear that I was almost a part of a bleach cult . I was not ready to lose my everything to gain a friendship . Those moms were , and that is what separates us .
Katie Emde lives in Saskatchewan , Canada , with her husband and three kids .
Her oldest son Avery was diagnosed with severe nonverbal autism . Her daughter Natalie is learning so much while the family does homeschooling . Katie ’ s youngest son Jackson is four years old and loves everything about dinosaurs and the outdoors .
When getting Avery diagnosed , Katie found everything to be extremely overwhelming and difficult to navigate . Katie started advocating for hundreds of families all over the province . She helps families navigate their autism journeys and has done numerous fundraisers and supported various nonprofits over the years .
Katie found her voice when her son struggled and now she uses her voice for many .
