ADHD a ‘ risk factor ’ for cocaine abuse

Sarah Simpkins PATIENTS with undiagnosed ADHD are turning to cocaine and other illicit substances to self-manage their symptoms , a psychiatrist has warned .
Dr Ashlea White , who is based in Brisbane , also said patients with cocaine use disorder could be screened for ADHD regardless of whether they were seeking an assessment .
“ There is more and more evidence coming out of the comorbidity between substance use — particularly
stimulants like cocaine — and underlying ADHD diagnosis ,” she told AusDoc .
“ Once patients have done the screening tool , and then further collateral history and getting scoring records , you can see there has clearly been a longstanding diagnosis .”
She added that ADHD was an “ inherent risk factor ” for stimulant abuse .
As part of her practice at Banyans Healthcare — a specialist mental health and addiction rehabilitation
facility — Dr White also screened for White said some patients were undeterred by the cost and sought it out other conditions , such as depression , anxiety and bipolar disorder . over other illicit stimulants , such as

Sceptics push paper

FROM PAGE 1 cardiologist Dr Peter McCullough , a controversial COVID-19 vaccine sceptic in the US .
Senator Roberts — who previously called COVID-19 vaccines “ the crime of the century ” — told his 108,000 followers on X that these were “ stunning revelations from an entity that originally pushed the COVID-19 injections ”.
“ Look at what the RACGP has just published for all Australian doctors ,” Senator Roberts wrote .
“ This explains the increased disease / deaths and long COVID in three paragraphs .”
Dr Campbell , a retired nurse educator whose You- Tube posts condemning the vaccines have been viewed a billion times around the world , said the article showed that doctors were gradually “ trickling out ” the truth .
“ They are letting it out drip by drip … This is from an official paper , so it ’ s quite powerful really . Not because of what it says — we ’ ve suspected this for a long time — but [ because ] it is in this GPs ’ journal now .”
However , the author of the AJGP paper , Emeritus Professor Robert Tindle ( PhD ), said the paper was “ most emphatically not some sort of anti-vax manifesto for COVID-19 ”.
“ The paper was a bringing together of some of the perspectives of sufferers , doctors , the scientific research community , politicians , health administrators and pharma companies on the state of the long COVID issue ,” he said .
“ In no sense is it valid that the article be construed by anti-vaxxers as proof that the medical literature now recognises that COVID-19 vaccines cause long COVID , although one can see that Dr Campbell ’ s interpretation may foster that view .”
The RACGP said it had no concerns with the decision to publish the article , which underwent “ rigorous ” internal and external review . Aust J Gen Pract 2024 ; Apr .
