DAY 8 Rockhampton / Airlie Beach
The drive continues north along the coast with ample places to stop and stretch your legs . Today ’ s destination is Airlie Beach , regarded as the gateway to the iconic Great Barrier Reef ( 297 miles ).
DAY 9 Airlie Beach
There are ample cruises that offer a day trip out to magnificent underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef . If you prefer to stay on land , there are delightful beaches where you can idle the day away .
DAY 10 Airlie Beach / Magnetic Island
Drive onwards to Townsville where you ’ ll catch a ferry for Magnetic Island for a world of unspoilt beauty and more Airlie Beach than 20 golden beaches ( 169 miles land only ).

DAY 11 Magnetic Island
Thrill seekers can get adrenaline surging with adventure sports such as wakeboarding , or simply hire a kayak for a paddle around Horseshoe Bay . With two thirds of the island designated a national park , it ’ ll be no surprise to find plenty of places to walk . Along the way , you may even catch a glimpse of wild koalas !
DAY 12 Magnetic Island / Mission Beach
Catch the return ferry back to Townsville and drive onwards to Mission Beach , home to palm-fringed beaches and laidback cafes while also offering access to the outer Great Barrier Reef ( 146 miles land only ).
DAY 13 Mission Beach / Port Douglas
Enjoy the coastal scenery as you plot your course for Port Douglas , a tropical town that mixes laidback lifestyle with exhilarating adventure and luxury experiences , with the added bonus of being a stone ’ s throw from where two World Heritage listed areas collide ( 126 miles ).
DAYS 14-15 Port Douglas
