DAY 1 Fly to Darwin
DAY 2 Darwin On arrival transfer to your hotel .
DAY 3 Darwin
Your tour begins today with an orientation to meet locals , discover the city ’ s architecture and learn about the events that have shaped life at the Top End . Later , head to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market , a true Darwin institution , to browse the stalls before dinner with fellow travellers .
DAY 4 Darwin / Katherine
As you begin your sojourn south , there are more reminders of the impact WWII had on the region , including a poignant cemetery . Nature then takes over at Nitmiluk National Park which borders Kakadu . This is Jawoyn land , and a place where you ’ ll feel your spirit soar , particularly when you ’ re cruising through the dramatic Nitmiluk ( Katherine ) Gorge . There ’ s no time to catch your breath , as you ’ re then off to meet Tom Curtain on a vast working outback station for a fun , engaging and insightful tour .
DAY 5 Katherine / Kununurra
Cross the border into Western Australia and take in the unexpected delights of Kununurra which is in the middle of nowhere . Pause at the Durack Homestead Museum and later , take a sunset cruise where you ’ re surrounded by freshwater crocs and an embarrassment of birds .
DAY 6 Kununurra
Why not rise early for a bird ’ s eye view of the Bungle Bungles on an optional scenic flight over World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park . Or , stay grounded on a 4WD tour through the ethereal landscape ( both extra expense ). Otherwise , lace up your walking shoes and wander through Mirima National Park , known as the ‘ mini- Bungles ’ for its rocky resemblance . Later , be sure to join the locals atop Kelly ’ s Knob for views over the town .
DAY 7 Kununurra / El Questro Wilderness Park
First up is a visit to the Hoochery Distillery to discover how they prepare their lip-smacking , award-winning rums and whiskys . Travel on along the Gibb River Road , the stuff road trip legends are made of , as you ’ ll see as you head to El Questro Wilderness Park .
DAY 8 El Questro Wilderness Park
After waking to the call of wildlife , you ’ ll head across the mighty Pentecost River , a mecca for those who love a spot of barramundi fishing . Arriving at Chamberlain Gorge , an enormous fresh waterhole , your cruise chariot awaits . Jump aboard and cruise between the soaring escarpments which are a brilliant shade of orange in the morning sun . What better way to cool down than with a dip , either in the resort pool or at a waterhole within Emma Gorge .
DAY 9 El Questro Wilderness Park / Halls Creek
Until recently , the Argyle Diamond Mine was the world ’ s largest producer of rare , and dazzling , pink diamonds . While operations have ceased , you can still visit and go behind the scenes . Your Aboriginal guide will point out where the magic once happened and also explain the significance of this land to First Nations communities . Equally important to Aboriginal communities is the Great Sandy Desert , which Halls Gap perches on the edge of .
DAY 10 Halls Creek / Fitzroy Crossing
The remote town of Fitzroy Crossing acts as the gateway to Danggu ( Geikie ) Gorge . But before you cruise the waterway , take time to browse the Aboriginal art gallery . Once on board , discover how this remarkable part of the Kimberley was formed and keep watch for all creatures great and small , from freshwater crocs to fruit bats and wallabies . Look up also to see white-bellied sea eagles and rare , purple-crowned fairy wrens .
DAY 11 Fitzroy Crossing / Broome
Travel on to Broome and on arrival a city tour helps you get your bearings . Then it ’ s time to settle in for Broome ’ s other attraction : its sunsets . Follow locals to the sand on Cable Beach and grab a drink to salute the end of another spectacular day in WA .
DAY 12 Broome
At leisure . Optional tours include a scenic flight over or heart-starting cruise through the magical Horizontal Falls ( both extra expense ). Or , simply enjoy Broome ’ s tropical climes , strolling along Cable Beach , hunting for dinosaur footprints and browsing the pearl boutiques in town . This evening , join new found friends for a farewell dinner .
