Perth is Australia ’ s only state capital where you can soak up the beach lifestyle , relax in natural bushland , sample world-class local wines and watch an ocean sunset all within just 30 minutes of the city . It ’ s also the sunniest state capital and boasts a string of 19 sandy beaches , from iconic Cottesloe to the surf hotspot of Scarborough . Known as ‘ Freo ’ by the locals , Fremantle lies just south of Perth . It ’ s a vibrant port city with an eclectic arty atmosphere whose charm is found in narrow streets lined with historic buildings , unconventional breweries , along with buzzing markets , lively bars and casual street cafés . Just half an hour from Fremantle by ferry , car free and carefree Rottnest Island is a holiday haven of pristine beaches , aquamarine bays , bike tracks and walking trails . It ’ s also home to quokkas – a cross between a rabbit and a kangaroo . Around three hours drive south of Perth , the Margaret River is Australia ’ s only wine region where you can hop from award-winning wineries and restaurants to stunning beaches , tall-timber forests , world-class surf breaks and ancient caves .
At the top end of the famous wine region is Busselton where you ’ ll be dazzled by the ivory sand and turquoise ocean . Be sure to stroll along its heritage-listed jetty or view Australia ’ s best artificial reef at the Underwater Observatory . Further south , the breathtaking beauty of Albany ’ s rugged coastline creates a fitting backdrop to a dramatic whaling , convict and settler history . In Esperance you can lay down a towel on the whitest sand you may ever experience and watch kangaroos laze on the shore at Lucky Bay . On the stunning Coral Coast prepare to be bowled over by World Heritage Listed Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef – the largest fringing reef on earth ; in Monkey Mia get up close to the famous dolphins , while welcoming Exmouth is a mecca for divers and snorkellers . Near the coastal town of Cervantes are the lunar-like Pinnacles , where thousands of tall limestone spires rise eerily out of the desert sands and , in Kalbarri 400 million year old river gorges meet the Indian Ocean .
In the north west tropical Broome is where old and modern worlds collide , and where the ocean meets the outback in picture-perfect style . Nature puts on an unmissable show at Cable Beach while also not to be missed is the incredible Bungle Bungle Range in the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park or the rocky landscapes of Karijini National Park . The Australian outback ’ s biggest city , Kalgoorlie is a mix of gold rush history , grand colonial buildings and immense mining operations , surrounded by dazzling spring wildflowers and spooky ghost towns .
