Travis High School Honors Cancer Patients
The Rebel football team
recently took a different
approach to the Breast
Cancer Awareness
Campaign in October.
Coach Joe Frank Martinez
charged his players with
going beyond just buying
pink gear. He challenged
each player to find
someone connected to
them that either has
cancer, in any form, or is a
survivor. The football
team responded like
champions. Each player
wrote a letter to the
patients/survivors and
talked to them about their
strength and courage
throughout this difficult
part of their life. The
players each picked a
game during the month to
dedicate to the patient/
survivor and gave them
the letters before the
game.
In addition, Vicki Nino, a
mother to four Travis
students over the past 10
years, and cancer patient
was named an honorary
captain before the Battle
of the Bell game vs
McCallum. She led the
team out to the f ield and
participated in the coin
toss. The Rebels then had
a moment of silence on
the 50 yard line.
Unfortunately, Vicki
passed away 3 days later.
The nurses around her
said that she was
delighted that she got to
Middle School Football
During the first week of
November, AISD’s middle
school football teams
competed in our district
tournament. Every team
gets a chance to play as
we divide the schools into
four zones: North, South,
West, & Central. The team
with the best record from
each zone plays each
other. South plays Central
and North plays West. The
winners face each other
for your 1NW vs 1CS
championship. The same
goes for teams with these
2nd best record, 3rd best
and 4th best in their
respective zones.
Congratulations to
Kealing’s 7th grade team
and Small’s 8th grade team
for ending #1 overall! The
season ended on a windy,
wet, and cold night. The
teams had a blast playing
under what some call
“real football weather.”
Congrats to all the Middle
School Teams. What a
great Season.
Middle School Volleyball Tournament
AISD’s Volleyball teams
recently completed our
middle school tournament
which placed the teams in
the North and Central
Zones against each other
and the South and West
Zones against each other.
The teams battled to the
top for both the 7th and 8th
grade championships.
Congratulations
to Kealing’s 7th and 8th
grade Volleyball teams
that captured the North/
Central Zone
Championship. For the
South/West Zones,
spend time with the team. The
boys have truly been touched
and the lesson imparted to
these young men about life
will last long beyond football.
