A dog ' s skin can be affected by the sun the same as humans . Overexposure to the sun can cause red , irritated , and painful skin . A dog with a sunburn can get scaly skin and lose hair . It is also possible for dogs to get skin cancer from sun exposure . Dogs with light skin , white coats , pale noses , or short hair , tend to be at a higher risk for skin damage caused by the sun .
There are " pet friendly " sunscreens on the market to help protect dogs from harmful UV rays . It is VERY important to only use sunscreen that is specifically made for dogs . Human sunscreen contains zinc oxide and salicylates , which are both toxic to dogs if ingested . Salicylates can have many negative effects on dogs , including metabolic acidosis , which is caused by a buildup of toxins within the body . Salicylates can also cause liver damage , gastric ulcers , and sometimes seizures and hyperthermia . Zinc oxide , which is also commonly found in diaper rash cream , can also cause a variety of problems . Common side effects of ingestion of zinc oxide are GI upset ( vomiting / diarrhea ), and in more severe cases , anemia may occur . Some dogs may even have an allergic reaction to zinc oxide , and will experience itching and facial swelling .

Sunscreen for Dogs
If you ' re going to apply dog-friendly sunscreen to your pet , try it on a small area of the skin first to make sure it doesn ' t cause a reaction . Be careful not to get it in the dog ' s eyes . The best way to protect your dog from sunburn is to avoid being in direct sunlight for a long period of time between the hours of 10 am-4 pm . The sun ' s rays are most harmful during those hours .
