The Rainbow Bridge by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
The idea of the Rainbow Bridge originated from a poem that was written years ago. It is described as a beautiful, sunny meadow where cherished pets find peace after they leave this world. When they reach this paradise, they are healed completely, living in happiness without pain, sickness, or suffering. Faithful pets wait there until they are reunited with their owners, then together they cross the rainbow bridge into the afterlife. It’ s not for certain who the original author of Rainbow Bridge was, but is believed to be written in the 1950’ s by a Scottish artist / writer named Edna Clyne-Rekhy. Losing a pet is a heartbreaking experience, but for years the Rainbow Bridge has provided comfort and hope for many grieving pet owners.
“ Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, your pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and friends are warm and comfortable."
All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and strength, those who were hurt are made better and strong again, like we remember them before they go to heaven. They are happy and content except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance, his bright eyes are shining, his body shakes. Suddenly he begins to run from the herd, rushing over the grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cuddle in a happy hug, never to be apart again.
You and your pet are in tears. Your hands again cuddle his head and you look again into his trusting eyes, so long gone from life, but never absent from your heart, and then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.”
In 2015, author and blogger Deborah Barnes established Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. Deborah’ s cat, Mr. Jazz, passed away on August 28th, 2013, which inspired her to write a book about him. The book touched so many readers that she designated that date to honor beloved pets that are no longer here. Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is also observed in Canada, Australia, and the UK. For many people, pets aren’ t just animals; they are family, so losing them is incredibly tough.“ Having a pet will bless you with the happiest days of your life and one of the the worst days”.
