Walshy Fire
1st December 2017 saw international artist Walshy Fire take to the stage in Grand Baie, Mauritius. We were proud to sponsor the event which was hosted by Urban Pulse. Thank you to Summer for representing us on this occasion and being able to understand Walshy Fire from an artist’s perspective.
Walshy Fire was a joy to welcome to the island with his humble persona. He was not only interested in the gig, but also of the history and origins of Mauritius - he even learned a little creole to be at one with the locals. ‘We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.’ This quote from Pierre Teilhard de Chardin came to mind upon meeting with him as he is able to value others and connect on a human level.
When speaking of Mauritius, he felt it was reminiscent of his home country of Jamaica, “there is this pride of everybody mixed together and creating their own culture. That sense of fighting through colonialism and creating something unique and exciting.”
It is to be appreciated that when Walshy Fire speaks of music or his vision of the world, he relates to his Jamaican roots. His heart is still there wherever he is, keeping the people and the love of Jamaica with him.
In regards to this, he also explains the following, “I represent the region of the Caribbean. That includes Zouk, Soca, Kompa, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Reggae, Dancehall - so it encompasses all. Do I feel like I’ve accomplished that? No. I feel like this is going to be a lifelong mission and I’m thankful for the little accomplishments, I have gotten people who have never heard this kind of music before and now, through Major Laser, are able to research who Celia Cruz or Peter Tosh is. THere’s a lot more work to do for sure. I’ll be doing this for the rest of my life.”
When speaking of the crowd’s expectations, Walshy Fire explained that all he hoped for is that “everybody comes with an open mind and an open heart to receive a good positive message and a great atmosphere with a lot of fun.”
On the night of the event, he lit up the stage from within. Full of energy,
