Everyone has their own taste in music. That’s what makes us unique individuals. It’s really interesting witnessing a pool of people that enjoy one song or genre, while there’s another group that doesn’t. Some songs you can fall in love with on the spot, some takes a while to grow on you, other songs totally are shut off before their over.
I tweeted this about a month ago, but, have you ever hated a song until you saw the music video? That idea turned from a tweet into an actual interest. I’m a music video fanatic, because I like connecting more with the artists through how they want to express their song visually. This has happened multiple times which is interesting, in listening to the song solely as a song, or as the background to the story being told in (usually) three minutes.
These are the songs I was not a fan of until I saw the music videos, and now I can’t stop listening (and watching)!
DNCE - Toothbrush
Being a hopeless romantic, this video is so cute. It shows the simple joys of dating someone and enjoying each others’ presence. It adds to the story, especially with a song as strangely titled as “Toothbrush.”
Jennifer Lopez - Ain’t Your Mama
I am a huge JLo fan, but this song didn’t click with me at first… until I saw the music video. It all made sense! Sometimes, I hate music videos with acting, like let’s just get to the music, right? But this worked, especially with the story it told in her role in a relationship. This video was the inspiration for this entire idea, because now I can’t help but get up and dance when this song comes on. The video tells a tale of women empowerment, and includes dances moves I have been trying to learn since it came out.
Feist - 1234
I remember being obsessed with this video when it first came out in 2007. I thought the way the extras [literally] carried the video was mesmerizing, and keeps people watching to the end. Except, when I hear this song playing on its own at a store or restaurant, it doesn’t capture the message as much as the video.
Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend
This song is good on its own, but this video is especially entertaining to watch due to her improvised dance moves
