Three Girl Rhumba
Who are Three Girl Rhumba and how did you come together to create the band?
Three Girl Rhumba are Tom Thurgood (guitar and lead vocals), James Sefton (bass and vocals) and myself Ian Lee (Drums and vocals). We all went to school in Nottingham and formed a band when we were 16. We played gigs around Nottingham for the next 2 years while we were at Bilborough College. After college we all went our separate ways with work and Uni, so we had to call it a day. And that was that for the best part of 5 years. We started jamming again at the end of summer last year, and really started taking it seriously in January this year. Our first gig as TGR was in March at Nottingham's jam Cafe.
How did you each start out in the music industry?
We all started out at the same really, picking up instruments when we first started at secondary school. We’ve always had a real DIY spirit, and we used to arrange all of our own gigs with other bands we were at college with. We’d just promote them in the hallways by throwing flyers of the balconies and stuff like we were at an american high school. We never had trouble packing out the infamous Old Angel on a Saturday night, there were a lot of talented musicians knocking about at college.
Tell us about your style of music and your influences in music.
I’m not really sure if we have an exact style. We all have a proper eclectic taste in music, and I think that translates into the way we all play our instruments and write songs. We take influences from just about every genre of music. As a band though, we like a lot of ska, post punk, soul, funk, hip hop, indie and electronic music. Anything interesting really. It wouldn’t be unusual to find us listening to Fela Kuti in the car one day and Television the next.
Favourite tracks?
There are too many to list realistically, but the three of us were in the car last week with Parquet Courts new album on and we found ourselves singing along rather enthusiastically to the outro of a track called Instant Dis-assembly. We were lucky enough to catch their set at Glastonbury a couple of weeks ago, they were easily the best band I saw that weekend.
