December 6 , 1987 While a staff member at AJC , David Harris organizes Freedom Sunday on the eve of a summit between Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and U . S . President Ronald Reagan . The march in Washington , D . C ., to demand freedom for Soviet Jews becomes the largest Jewish rally in
U . S . history . Following the march , Reagan tells Gorbachev :

1989 AJC recognizes Asia as the new frontier by founding its visionary Asia Pacific Institute ( API ). API plays a significant role in expanding the relationships of Israel and the global Jewish community with Asian Americans and Asian countries .

March 1990 AJC is the first Jewish group to have a private audience with Pope John Paul II since the resolution of the Auschwitz convent crisis and since sweeping changes have taken place across Eastern Europe . The trip is in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Vatican Council II and Nostra Aetate .
1990
October 3 , 1990 East and West Berlin reunite on German Unity Day , and for the first time since 1945 there is a single German state .
