Shortly after we got married things went terribly wrong. My husband was extremely abusive and cruel. He was jealous and possessive. He began to think I was having an affair. We decided to go to marriage counseling at our church. My husband never hesitated to tell the Pastor every single thing that I did wrong. That would result in an hour session of them telling me how I could be a better wife. We never discussed the way my husband treated me, which had by that time became physical. Finally one day I asked the Pastor if he knew that my husband hit me. His response was “yes he may hit you, but look at the things you do”. Then he asked my husband if he thought he could “take” the guy I was supposedly having an affair with. My husband said yes, and the Pastor said “good, if not let me know and me and a few guys from the church can dress up in our black hoods and teach him a lesson”. I could not believe the things that I was hearing. A man of god should never be saying these things. I knew I had to get away once and for all.

I started finding out things about this Pastor and the way this church believed. The pastor and his family believed that TV was evil. They did not own one. They strongly suggested that everyone in the congregation get rid of their TVs as well. Halloween was evil and under no circumstances should one ever celebrate it. If you had friends that were not involved in the church, you were expected to cut off contact with them. Those kinds of friends would only tempt you to do bad things. No cussing was permitted EVER.
