Gluttony looks specifically at what we consume. It not only look at the quantity, however (which is also covered with greed), but also the quality. In today's society, many people are affected by gluttony, which is translated into the rise of obesity and diet and poor exercise related illnesses. Unfortunately, this sin is also perpetuated, by the fact that many people don't know what is good or bad for them, with the sin of greed being the driving force behind what is taught to the population (those selling are driven by greed and promote for their own gain rather than what is best). It is very easy to be overcome by gluttony, especially when that which is not good for you, tastes and feels so good (as it's made that way!)
Belphegor, The inventor: Demon of Sloth
In the mythology surrounding Belphegor, it is said that he used inventions to create riches and promote laziness. On the surface it would appear that he was helping, whereas in reality those affected would become more and more idle. Looking at the world today, it is obvious to see that society (on a whole) is very much inflicted with the sin of sloth. All the time new and better inventions are being created to prevent us from doing things for ourselves and achieving our full potential.
While returning to old skills and abilities may not be practical any more, we should look at what we can do to reduce our dependence on the new technology – not allowing such things to detract from our goals to reach our full potential.
Recognising Sin
Each of these sins, and demons, can affect us at different levels. If we take time to look at how we are responding to different situations, we may begin to recognise the sin affecting us and better deal with them. Part three of this series will look at the virtues that are said to combat the sins and their corresponding angel. By falling back on the qualities that the virtues bring, we put ourselves into a better position to move towards our spiritual goals – letting go of the demons that are holding us back.
