Moon Dance
“Follow your inner moonlight; don't hide the madness.” - Allen Ginsberg
“I have always felt bewitched and glamoured by the Moon.” This was said by a young girl, red hair, fair skin, and freckles. She loved the Sun but had to be careful in sunlight. When the Moon was full, this was her time - she moonbathed. She would slip into her bathing suit, grab her lounge chair, music, flashlight, books, and go outside in the summer to bathe under the light of the full Moon. It was a magical time, not dark or scary, but a time where she could dance in the moonlight to her music; where no one was watching. Moonlight held a different energy. She could see the shadows of ordinary objects, they took on a different perspective. They were often the spirits of the trees and flowers and unknown visitors. Friends of the night came out to join her. They would peek around an object or tree and quickly disappear. Sometimes she thought it was just her imagination, but that didn’t really matter. Sometimes she knew it was not. Walking up to take a closer look, what she saw would shapeshift back into the landscape. The owls called out in the distance, and the tree frogs sang. During this Moon time, she became to know her own sexuality, her beautiful wildness.
As time went by, others girls came out to join her. They enjoyed telling stories, sharing their secrets and desires, and through storytelling, they spoke about what they feared the most; and then they danced. They danced out the things of the day; those feelings real and imagined. As time went by, they started to follow the cycles of the Moon, waiting for the Moon Dance.
