Explanation Huang Lian , Huang Qin and Hou Po clear heat , remove toxin , eliminate dampness and harmonise the middle jiao ; Hou Po also opens the chest . Zhi Mu and Zhi Zi combine to support the above herbs in clearing damp-heat and reduce fever . Sang Ye and Xing Ren clear heat in the Lung and relieve the cough . Cao Guo eliminates damp and removes toxin . Dang Shen , Bai Zhu and Fu Ling activate the Spleen , eliminate dampness , tonify the zheng qi and relieve diarrhoea . Yu Jin and Hong Hua harmonise the collaterals of the Lung to promote qi and blood circulation and prevent blood stasis . Zhi Gan Cao tonifies the middle jiao and harmonises the whole prescription .
Modifications
• If there is headache , add Bai Zhi ( Angelicae dahuricae Radix ) 10g .
• If there is emotional stress , add He Huan Pi ( Albiziae Cortex ) 10g and Fu Shen ( Poriae Sclerotium pararadicis ) 10g .
• If there is loss of smell and taste , add Cang Er Zi ( Xanthii Fructus ) 10g and Xin Yi Hua ( Magnoliae Flos ) 10g .
• If there is profuse expectoration of yellow phlegm , add Zhe Bei Mu ( Fritillariae thunbergii Bulbus ) 10g and Sang Bai Pi ( Mori Cortex ) 10g .
• If there is poor appetite and nausea , add Jiao Mai Ya ( dry-fried Hordei Fructus Germinatus ) 10g and Sha Ren ( Amomi Fructus ) 3g .
• If there is severe diarrhoea and abdominal bloating , add Ge Gen ( Puerariae Radix ) 10g and Cang Zhu ( Atractylodis Rhizoma ) 10g .

• Neiguan P-6 and Gongsun SP-4 descend Lung and Stomach qi and relieve cough and nausea ( even method ).
