Mandatory Concussion Training
When concussion training is required for team-level participation , all athletes and at least one parent must complete the National Federation of State High School Associations ( NFHS ) concussion training online course each school year . Parents must complete the Concussion in Sports course and athletes must complete the Concussion for Students course . The courses can be accessed at the NFHS website or via the link on the school ’ s app . After completing the course each parent and student need to print the certificate for the course they completed and return the certificate to the Athletic Director as part of the full Athletic Participation Packet .
Per state law , CCS coaches will annually complete concussion training for coaches and annually review with the Athletic Director what is required for all school coaches in Connecticut regarding concussion and head injury protocol .
Injuries & Return to Play Protocol
Players are to report all injuries to the coach immediately . Injuries that receive prompt medical attention will allow the athlete to return to competition quicker . Coaches must complete injury forms within 24 hours of the incident . Each coach should have the necessary injury forms in their coach ’ s clipboard or in the athletic medical kit . Athletes receiving injuries that require treatment by a physician must receive a signed release form from a physician stating when the student may return to participation and competition .
Per state law , coaches will follow the required protocol for safely allowing a student to return to play following a concussion . See Addendum A for the state ’ s protocol for returning to play .
Insurance
Due to the risk of injury involved with participation in athletics , the school requires that all students be covered by a medical insurance policy ( provided by the family ). The school does not provide accident insurance and may deny permission to participate to students without medical insurance coverage .
Chemical Use / Abuse
Any athlete found in use or possession of tobacco ( including smokeless ), vaping , alcohol , or illegal / non-prescription drugs ( including steroids ) on or off school grounds may be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season or school year . The student may also face additional school disciplinary action ( see the Parent-Student Handbook ).
Performance Enhancing Substances
The Cornerstone Christian School , in agreement with the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee of the National Federation of High Schools , promotes the safety and well-being of our studentathletes by taking the position that " in order to minimize health and safety risks to studentathletes , maintain ethical standards and reduce liability risks , school personnel and coaches [ must ] never supply , recommend or permit the use of any drug , medication or food supplement
