ARTISTIC TALENT RUNS IN
THIS FAMILY
Recently, Ron Switzer
and Jim McClure gifted
to ASUMH a large carv-
ing of St. Francis of Assi-
si by legendary Ozarks
woodcarver Junior Cobb.
Cobb’s talent for crafting
human and wildlife figures took him to the White House
with then-Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller during the John-
son administration. His works have been displayed by
the Smithsonian. Cobb began carving at age 6 and sold
his early works to travelers taking the small ferry that his
father ran across the White River. Junior Cobb’s grand-
son, Seth Stapleton, is a current student at ASUMH and
was anxious to see the large carving – the biggest one
of his grandfather’s carvings he has ever seen. Pictured
with the carving of St. Francis of Assisi is Stapleton who
is studying graphic design and art at ASUMH.
