An Update From the Scorer Education Manager( SEM)
This time of year is all about practical scoring rather than attending courses, and offers a great opportunity for on-the-job training and sharing experiences with colleagues. I am always interested in how other scorers work and never fail to pick up a few tips and ideas as the season progresses.
Talking to other officials during the season is invaluable. It can confirm your understanding, kindle new ideas and expand horizons with the benefit of other people’ s experiences, but sometimes scorers are hidden away in isolated scoreboxes on regular circuits, and all too often without a colleague.
With today’ s technology it is easy to converse regardless of location and the use of social media groups and forums is steadily increasing. This is a great way to connect with others, make friends and share opinions and advice, but do remember that these are unofficial lines of communication and that each group is only a small subsection of the officiating community.
Don’ t forget that each county has a nominated Scorer Officer( CSO) who can offer help and advice on scoring matters and will be kept up to date with ACO scoring business via their Regional Scorer Officer( RSO).
We will all need to communicate this autumn, as we grapple with the MCC Laws of Cricket 2017 code. Look out for guidance on what this means for scorers in the next issue of the ACO magazine and keep in touch with your CSO for full information when the changes come into force in October.
It’ s good to talk, so why not send me an email to scorer. aco @ ecb. co. uk and let me know your views on scorer communication?

In The Summer of‘ 17
Yes, it’ s wall-to-wall cricket this summer.
With so many competitions going on it will keep all of our colleagues on their toes and eyes front! A number of scorers will be experiencing multi-day cricket for the first time and many others will have stepped up a level, having gained from continuous professional development( CPD) and assessment over the winter.
The hard work put in by the ACO team of tutors and officers comes to fruition once April comes around. I sincerely hope everyone is enjoying their scoring thus far.
The Scorers Sub-Committee( SSC) continues to work tirelessly on your behalf. I am sure most of you are aware of just how much volunteer hard graft is put in to produce the coursework that is available for our scorer tutors. Plus the amount of time SSC officers contribute working alongside an ECB project team on the development of scoring packages.
We know from feedback that the video which was made recently has been used to great success for scorer training courses nationwide, and we are rightly proud of that product. I thank our working party and production team yet again; I’ m not ashamed to keep repeating thanks where it is due!
It has been another busy time appointment-wise and I have been able to appoint ECB ACO scorers to many tournaments and competitions.
We have also been able to assist with county Second XI and age-group games once more when asked, plus ECB Under 19s and Super 4s, along with MCC Universities( MCCU) matches.
We were consulted about appointments made to the Women’ s World Cup and able to verify scorer status. All of this bodes very well for the future.
A number of last-minute requests have already fallen on my desk this season, and I know from experience there will be more! So thank you so very much to everyone who is gracious and willing to take on appointments at the last minute.
The scorer community is gaining recognition, slowly but surely, and our part to play in the game appears to be valued a little more each season from where I’ m sitting! Keep up the standards and if you wish to progress, make contact with your County Scorer Officer( CSO) in the first instance. They will give you good advice and point you in the right direction.
If you have any scorer-related issues and comments, be they good or bad, we would ask that you channel them via scorer. aco @ ecb. co. uk so that we can deal with them directly.
Our Young Officials’ scorers have made a contribution to this issue of the magazine and have had a great experience scoring at a couple of corporate events at Lord’ s. I am very proud of them and thank them all for their good work and the positive impression made on all those who saw them in action. The future is looking bright!
Another item of good news is the fact that I, as National Scorers’ Officer, have been formally appointed to sit on the ECB ACO Management Committee, thus giving scorer members a voice within that assembly.
