Blurring of the lines BY DENNIS BRECKENRIDGE In the market today, the role of the systems integrator is oft en overlooked. Many perceive systems integrators as merely equipment vendors or install teams; however, systems integrators should play a much more critical role to help customers navigate the increas- ingly complex business of media. Today’s various formats and trans- port methods such as fi le-based work- fl ows and increasingly IP-based trans- port streams have added new options but also challenges like interoperability. Th ese technologies are made more complex by the additional production methods being utilised by custom- ers, such as “remote production” and distribution including direct-to-home (DTH), terrestrial broadcast, over-the- top (OTT) and the Web. To face these challenges, systems integrators should be playing the role of a consultant, and not just a simple supplier, and help businesses to face the new challenges as a partner.
