Upcoming ‘electronic satellite’
launch, main buzz at Eutelsat
The main buzz at Eutelsat’s booth at
CommunicAsia2017 is the upcoming launch
of its ‘completely electronic’ satellite the
Eutelsat 172B, which will cater mostly to the
Asian market.
Scheduled to launch on this June 1, the
Eutelsat 172B satellite will not only provide
video distribution between Asia and the
Americas, but it would also zero in on a
growing trend — in-flight connectivity.
Vanessa O’ Connor, Eutelsat’s director of
Corporate Communications, says the com-
pany sees in-flight connectivity as a growing
trend, especially as the 172B satellite would
enable not only connectivity on planes, but
live TV as well.
Panasonic Avionics Corporation has
selected the Eutelsat 172B satellite as its
platform for trans-Pacific and Asian in-flight
broadband and live TV services for com-
mercial airlines.
The new satellite would also have an in-
novative High Throughput Ku-band payload
designed for in-flight broadband with multi-
ple user spots optimised to serve densely-
used Asian and trans-Pacific flight paths.
