GatesAir ’ s new solutions combine high efficiency with smaller footprints

BY RICHARD SEAH
Smaller footprints — both in terms of physical size and the “ carbon footprint ” that measures energy consumption — are the key offerings from veteran broadcast equipment manufacturer GatesAir .
The company , which has been in business for nearly 100 years with customers in 185 countries , is exhibiting a new range of transmitters that promise higher levels of energy efficiency combined with high performance .
“ We are here to help broadcasters save space and save costs ,” says Jishun Mei , vicepresident for Asia-Pacific and China . “ We will also help them smooth their transition to digital broadcasts and , at the same time , strengthen their existing analogue networks .”
GatesAir has made efficiency leaps in the past decade with the introduction of its PowerSmart transmitter architecture , which has resulted in smaller transmitters , streamlined parts and minimised energy consumption .
In March this year , it introduced PowerSmart Plus , touted as the next generation of the same high efficiency architecture .
“ PowerSmart Plus employs newly available LDMOS power amplifiers to enhance the benefits of the PowerSmart system ,” Mei says . “ This resulted in nearly a 40 % increase in AC to RF efficiency for DVB-T , DVB-T2 and other CODFM TV modulations .”
The heart of the PowerSmart Plus system is GatesAir ’ s Maxiva ULXT high-efficiency UHF transmitter series , which is being exhibited at the GatesAir booth at 5G4-04 .
The Maxiva ULXT employs GatesAir ’ s latest innovation in liquid cooling , which is a novel heat-to-liquid transfer process that efficiently removes heat from the RF plant . “ This will reduce traditional air-conditioning requirements and cooling costs ,” Mei explains .
The same technology is now also available in GatesAir ’ s Flexiva FLX transmitter . “ FM and HD radio broadcasters can therefore similarly reduce their utility costs and establish more environment-friendly operations .”
An added advantage is that the new liquid-cooled transmitters are even smaller than the earlier units , which were already considered to have a minimal footprint . This is achieved partly by integrating low-noise pump modules within the cabinet , which also provide for quieter operations .
For broadcasters that either do not need or cannot accommodate liquid-cooled transmitters , GatesAir will also show its highefficiency Flexiva FAX air-cooled transmitters .
“ Collectively , our range of liquid-cooled and air-cooled transmitters support power levels from 10W-80kW ,” Mei says . “ We offer an exceptionally broad range of solutions to meet any broadcaster ’ s specifications .”
GatesAir will also demonstrate its latest

high-performance TV and radio exciters , including the software-defined Maxiva XTE exciter . This supports all analogue and digital TV standards as well as DAB Radio to provide advanced signal processing , throughput and IP transport capabilities .
