Nieves Maya Workshops
NO SMOKING
The Basque Government organized a workshop called‘‘ Classes Without Smoke’’, which lasted two days, and which was against teenage smoking. In it, we eighth graders, with Mariana as our teacher, learned about the dangers of smoking and its negative effects. In the form of creative cartoons, photographs, or videos about experiments, we have learned astonishing facts which, we believe, should convince anyone that smoking is bad for your health. In addition to that, we had to ask our parents to answer a question sheet about common facts about smoking such as, what percentage of the Spanish population smokes. We also had to check that we had the correct answers. Amongst all of this, we ourselves also had to answer another questionnaire, admitting whether we have smoked once or twice, smoke daily, or have never even thought of doing it. Although this proved to be quite boring and dull, there was a more lucrative part to the workshop: we had to design a t-shirt in groups. It had to go against smoking and, if it was good enough, we would win a special prize from the Basque Government. However, all we have received is the T-Shirt designed by the winners, which says that at least we have learned all kinds of things about smoking and have been effectively warned against it!

Nieves Maya Workshops
Throughout the course of this year, the teachers of our school has had four workshops with Nieves Maya, a woman licensed in Educational Sciences at the University of Navarra. She is currently the director at a school in Vitoria-Gasteiz and is developing innovative projects non-stop. Nieves also writes about her studies and observations and some of the most important works is being the co-writer of the two books called“ Conocer el cerebro para la excelencia en la educación” and“ Causas médicas del fracaso escolar y tratamientos para superarlo.”
At our school, she provided the teachers with some very helpful advice. She walked in with a very precise goal which was to“ highlight, transmit and remind teachers of the importance and value of their work.” She recommended making students aware of their learning to help ourselves be provided with life-long skills. Some of the long list of objectives she had was to“ report on multiple intelligences and activities to work with them” and to be“ reminded of motivational strategies” to help both students and teachers to always do their best.
She also spoke about the eight different kinds of intelligences that we have; each person has a different way of thinking and it is very important to keep in mind that THEY ARE ALL JUST AS GOOD.
-Logical Intelligence consists in solving complex problems very quickly and it is often found in Maths.
-Linguistic Intelligence consists in having languages come easily to you and be capable of communicating.
-Spatial Intelligence is about grasping and understanding information visually.
-Musical Intelligence consists in learning by listening and music in these people’ s lives is very important.
-Kinesthetic Intelligence is about developing movements of the body that can later help to carry out certain tasks and solve certain problems.
-Natural Intelligence is having the capacity of understanding the natural world in general. People like this can very easily reflect about things happening around them.
-Interpersonal Intelligence is considered to be able to know and understand other people’ s feelings with this, know how to react and help.
-Intrapersonal Intelligence consists in understanding and learning how to work with one’ s self and also have easy access to your own emotions.
An interesting fact about these intelligences is that they can be found and traced down physically by analyzing one’ s brain.
To conclude, it is very important to observe that many IB learner profile traits can be found in the v a r i o u s t y p e s o f intelligences which we will all need to develop.
