Kalpetta, the district administrative capital of Wayanad district lies on Kozhikode -Mysore National Highway 212. It is believed that the place is named as Kalpetta by Jain migrants from Karnataka which means “deposit of stones”.

Kalpetta town is beautified by tea and coffee plantations, large and small hills and mountains throughout the land scape. As per Census 2011, the total population of Kalpetta is about 31,580 and literacy rate, 91.8%.
