How scientific are we in building our careers?
Gambling is considered very illogical. In an objective test with multiple options, we prefer to gamble only if, there is no negative marks. We have seen many programs in the TV where the smart people decide to step back, and leave with the money than gambling the answer for a question they are not sure of. We call them wise, or we can say they have the right sense. How precious the few marks in a test or the money we have accumulated? But why do we gamble on our choice of career, which to a large extend, defines your identity, your life and what you are. Sachin Tendulkar, A.R Rahman, P V Sindhu, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, Mammootty etc etc…. its difficult to detach their identity, life and who they are, from their career. Most of us will be spending considerable amount of time in our careers not just for money; but for recognition, social relationships, self esteem and a unique sense of worth. A great career happens only when the right person do the right things at the right time. It’s not accidental, and it should never be. And, by default, we are all in the reserved category of ‘right person’.
A study by Times Job survey 2016 reveals ‘60% of the employees are not happy with their jobs, and the dissatisfaction is on the rise while moving to junior levels.’ One thing is clear, the right person is not at the right place. So what might be going wrong? Let’s check the current method of how one selects a course and build their career.
