The only way I got through it was because I was taller than both of them and that gave me a false sense of power.
You spent some time based in Los Angeles living in a community of Australian actors. Did you find it supportive to be a part of this community? There were lots of ex-Neighbours and Home and Away actors [including Dichen Lachman (in Dollhouse and Last Resort) and Caitlin Stasey (Tomorrow When the War Began)]. My current flatmate is Rachael Taylor [who appeared in Transformers and Grey’s Anatomy]. It is very supportive and encouraging. We help each other run lines, etc. It’s like a home away from home.
What are the things you consider when choosing which roles you will accept? I want the role to be challenging. The more differences there are between the character and myself, the better. I enjoy seeing the world from another perspective. The overall story has to be something I find interesting also.
What are some of your favourite films? The Godfather, The Station Agent, You Can Count On Me, The Colour Purple. But also TV shows like Have you found that there is a different approach to filmmaking in the US, as opposed to Australia? Yes, Americans have been doing it a lot longer and they spend a lot more time on the writing phase of a film and on script development. Australia tends to rush out its product. Also, there is a lot more money that goes into American films, which allows a longer shooting period and more time to create. You have performed in several theatre productions – would you like to do more work on the stage? What is the ideal part you would like to play in the theatre, and how does it reflect your own personality? Six Feet Under and The Sopranos.
