through Birnbaum and his band-
mates’ own prism to create new
interpretation of familiar works.
“Other jazz musicians have
worked with Bach but the great
thing about jazz is we each have
our own voice or perspective to
offer, so I would say that my vi-
sion – along with Matt and Keita’s
– is somewhat different from other
jazz Bach projects that have been
done in the past,” states Birnbaum.
Born and raised in Boston, Mas-
sachusetts, Birnbaum grew up in
a house with a piano. “I found my-
self drawn towards it and would
often pick out melodies by ear
from the records that his parents
had ranging from classical to jazz
to The Beatles to a bunch of differ-
ent stuff,” Birnbaum recalls. From
an early age, he begged for piano
lessons but his parents thought he
was too young. He finally started
at age six. Neither of his parents
are musicians but both Birnbaum’s
younger brother and sister are
also now musicians.
