through Birnbaum and his band- mates’ own prism to create new interpretation of familiar works. “Other jazz musicians have worked with Bach but the great thing about jazz is we each have our own voice or perspective to offer, so I would say that my vi- sion – along with Matt and Keita’s – is somewhat different from other jazz Bach projects that have been done in the past,” states Birnbaum. Born and raised in Boston, Mas- sachusetts, Birnbaum grew up in a house with a piano. “I found my- self drawn towards it and would often pick out melodies by ear from the records that his parents had ranging from classical to jazz to The Beatles to a bunch of differ- ent stuff,” Birnbaum recalls. From an early age, he begged for piano lessons but his parents thought he was too young. He finally started at age six. Neither of his parents are musicians but both Birnbaum’s younger brother and sister are also now musicians.
