On Sunday, November 3 at 3:00
p.m., renowned New York City jazz
pianist and composer Adam Birn-
baum and his trio – Matt Clohesy
on bass and Keita Ogawa on per-
cussion – will bring Bach Refracted
to Music at Bunker Hill in Sewell,
New Jersey.
“I think people really enjoy hear-
ing material that they are quite
familiar with (these Bach pieces
are so iconic they are more or less
‘standards’) played in a different
context” Birnbaum explains.
The title for the program comes
from Birnbaum’s own interpreta-
tion of Bach’s The Well-Tempered
Clavier, Book I. “I’m taking these
preludes and playing around with
them so that some parts remain
familiar but other parts don’t” he
says. Sometimes Birnbaum uses
Bach’s original harmony to im-
provise on a different melody,
or sometimes he’ll play around
with the rhythm or mood of the
piece to create something new.
