ance. What is

dance? Dance is an art, a movement of the body, a way to express your emotion. Dance is a passion. Dance is hard for some, and a way of life for others, but everyone can do it; you just have to get comfortable moving and find the dance that suits you. Do you like to free style or hip-hop? Do you Latin, Swing, Cajun, or Belly dance? OR are you more of the Concert dancer: Ballet, Contemporary, or Modern? How do you know? You don’t, until you try!

Maybe this can help... know a little more about each style, and try out the ones you think you are interested in.

Free Style

Unplanned not choreographed dancing, also known as improvisation. Most people think hip-hop or club dancing when they hear the term free style, but it can be done with any genre or in any setting. Just let your body move to the music.

Hip Hop

A cultural movement that originated in the Bronx. Going along with Hip Hop music, this dance is done mostly to the beats in the music. It started out as just break dancing, which is not the “spinning on your head” type of dancing, but is the dancing that was done during the “breaks” in the lyrics. This is why the beat is so important, when Hip Hop originated the only thing being danced to was the beat. Hip Hop has become much more, incorporating the beats and lyrics of the music and doing shapes, isolations, and even flips with the body.

To give Free Style and Hip Hop a try check out our directory for dance schools who offer Hip-Hop.

Latin Dance

General term for various types of partner ballroom dances. A few examples are cha-cha-cha, rumba, salsa, samba, mambo, and merengue.

Swing Dance

Most popular in the 1920’s-1950’s. Originally danced to the jazz music of the time, before the “swing era” music came about. Most commonly known, and still danced today is the Lindy Hop and is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston.

Cajun Dancing

Most popular down here in Louisiana! There are a few types of “Cajun Dancing” that are done. The Cajun Jig which is your basic one step and the Jitter Bug which is your two step. Then of course Zydeco Dancing done to Zydeco music.
