Most of architecture magazines
published and circulated in Indonesia
present buildings, ideal houses, ideal
offices, ideal garden, etc. They are a
kind of template or model to guide
people who need to build something.
Architecture is identical to things that
are constructed and visible, rather
than empty space or the invisible. In
our paradigm, these empty spaces
are insignificant. We tend to think
that creating something means to fill
up the space, to be visible. I imagine
reading an architecture magazine that
showcase empty neglected lands, gaps,
and holes all of which are outside our
paradigm about cityscapes/building.
This first edition of Artisan tries to
present the blank, the empty to invite
all of us to understand the existence of
empty spaces in our imagination. They
are in our subconsciousness. When
we build something we actually have
had them in our mind. Thinking about
architecture is thinking about human
habitat too. So, I believe that to build is
not to fill something up, but to empty
the space.
