CA1 A VISIT TO THE
CODA MUSEUM
On the eleventh of November Tessa, Sophie and I went to the coda museum for our first
CA. CODA is a culture department for a wide audience. Here discussions are provoked,
experiences are shared and there is a large collection of literature and art.
We saw three different expositions. The first one was from ADO toys. ADO initially stood
for Arbeid door Onvolwaardigen (Labour by the Deficient), but later on was changed to
Apart Doelmatig Onverwoestbaar (Special Functional Indestructible) in 1962. These
special wooden toys were designed by Ko Verzuu between 1925 and 1955.
In 1920 a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients was founded. To prepare the patients for
their reintegration they set up a form of occupational therapy. One of the ways this took
shape was in the production of wooden toys. These toys were given the name ADO.
The second exhibit was Un peu de terre sur la peau. This is a jewellery exhibit with more
unconventional jewellery. The basis for the over one hundred pieces is clay. It is a
collaboration between the museum and la Fondation
d’entreprise Bernardaud. The pieces of jewellery were made
by nineteen different artists all from different countries. It’s
showing the history and traditions connected to jewellery but
also its indication of social status. The exhibition is portraying
both an historic collection and a collection of modern and
contemporary art.
The last one was the exposition of the animal paintings
competition. Animals have always been a popular theme in the
artist scene. The art pieces were judged on the use of colour,
techniques, originality and creativity. On the 28th of September
the winners were announced and the exposition was officially
opened by Marianne Thieme.
