Michelangelo’s first sculpting Picture 3: The Battle of the Centaurs (1491-1492) The Battle of the Centaurs, created by him at the age of 17, is considered a monumental work of art because of the simple and solid figures it depicts, thus giving a sense of tension to the violent interaction of the bodies. Michelangelo gains access to the higher social circles of Florence, as well as the circle of poets and humanists of the time. At the same time he is taught the basics of art by the renowned sculptor Bertolto di Giovanni. Later on, he stays as a guest at the monastery of Santo Spirito where he is given the chance to gain knowledge on the subject of anatomy. 21
