A&I: Thank you so much, Caroline, for sharing your deep insights and counsel with us. You have helped and inspired so many individuals through your books, workshops and online presence. And you are such an inspiration for Art & Inspiration! We would love to know: How does art play a role in your life? Do you have any favorite artists or paintings?
CM: I love art. My house is filled with art and everything about my house is artistic. I think art is basic to a beautiful life. Nicholas Roerich is my favorite artist by far. I absolutely adore his work. He was a mystic and his soul was enchanted. Of course, I love the classics: Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Raphael. And Rembrandt. And, oh my God, Bernini. They are icons. They are breathless wonders. I can’t even take my eyes off something that Bernini did. I can’t stop looking at it. I can’t stop wondering, “How did he do that?”
A&I: Yes, he is amazing,…
CM: So of those greats, Bernini is probably number one for me. And then the way art plays a role in my life…I see the world artistically. I think artistically. For me, everything is about color and form and beauty. Without art, it’s emptiness - it’s complete emptiness. It’s a void. When I walk into someone’s home, I think the first thing I look at is: do they have art? I never thought about that until right now. The first thing I notice is if someone is artistic in the way they keep their home - if they have artistic style, if they appreciate art and if they have art around their house. And I don’t mean expensive art – I just mean do they have anything artistic - from candles to whatever- that shows any appreciation of art. It’s important that I had my house done artistically because I like to live with art.
A&I: What is one of your greatest inspirations in life?
CM: Freedom. I am impassioned by the need to be free. Freedom and creativity. I think more than anything I can’t bear not to be free - not be free in my mind, in my spirit, in my life. Freedom to me is absolutely everything. I am very inspired by the founding fathers of the United States, their passion for freedom, and how they ended the Declaration of Independence: we pledge our honor, our happiness, everything, for the sake of liberty. It meant so much. Acts of integrity inspire me as well as acts of great generosity of the human spirit, for example where someone truly puts their life on the line and is willing to go to prison for others, for those who don’t even think about them and who could care less that
they’re there. That inspires me. And in a funny way, acts of cowardice are an inspiration. Because that’s exactly what I never
want to be. I never want to be ruled by being a coward or do hings that come from darkness. It’s harmful. So you can be inspired by
many, many things. And I believe very deeply in what human

Si vous restez conforme à ce que vous êtes, si vous n’avez pas trahi votre moi profond, alors, à la fin de la journée, vous pouvez affirmer « Je suis en accord avec les contrats que je vis, qu’on m’a donnés à vivre. » Les actes de trahison (de trahison envers soi-même ou une autre personne) sont le signe que vous n’êtes plus en conformité avec les accords que vous avez promis de faire et d’accomplir. Gardez à l’esprit de vivre en harmonie avec la vérité telle qu’elle s’offre à vous de toutes les manières possibles : votre vérité intérieure, sans vous trahir vous-même, sans négocier avec votre vous intérieur. Quand vous êtes en conflit, détachez-vous de la scène et posez-vous les bonnes questions. Ne vous demandez jamais : « Pourquoi cette personne s’en prend à moi ? » mais plutôt : « Pourquoi est-ce que je perds le pouvoir ? Pourquoi est-ce que j’interagis avec cette personne ? Pourquoi me fait-elle peur ? Comment dois-je réagir ?” Ne cherchez pas à tout rejeter sur l’autre, parce que lui, vous ne pourrez jamais le changer. Et on ne peut jamais raisonner avec un monstre qui vient vers vous. Revenez toujours à vous, de la bonne façon. Pas d'une façon narcissique, mais comme un examen de conscience.

Et vous êtes une telle source d’inspiration pour Art & Inspiration ! Nous adorerions savoir : Quel rôle joue l’art dans votre vie ? Avez-vous des artistes ou peintures favoris ?
CM : J’adore l’art. Ma maison est remplie d’art et tout ce qui concerne ma maison est artistique. J’estime que l’art est la base d’une belle vie. Nicholas Roerich est de loin mon artiste préféré. J’adore littéralement son travail. C’était un mystique et son âme était magique. Bien sûr, j’adore les classiques : Michel-Ange, De Vinci et Raphael. Et Rembrandt. Et, mon Dieu, Le Bernin. Ce sont des légendes. Des merveilles à vous couper le souffle. Je suis même incapable de lâcher du regard quelque chose que Le Bernin a réalisé. Je ne peux m’en détacher les yeux. Je n’arrête pas de me demander, « Mais comment il a fait ça ? »
A&I : Oui, c’est incroyable…
CM : Aussi parmi ces grands artistes, Le Bernin est probablement le numéro un pour moi. Et puis il y a la façon dont l’art joue un rôle dans ma vie… Je vois le monde de manière artistique. Je pense de manière artistique. Pour moi, tout n’est que couleur, forme, beauté. Sans l’art, c’est le néant, le néant complet. Le vide. Quand je pénètre chez quelqu’un, je crois que la première chose que je regarde c’est : est-ce qu’il y a de l’art ? Je n’y avais jamais songé jusqu’à maintenant.
