CA 8 Visit to Paris General Information From the 17th until the 19th I visited Paris together with my Family and my former babysitter Greet. We went there by car and stayed in hotel 20 minutes away by metro from the city centre. We departed very early on Saturday the 17th and left around 1 pm on Monday. During the trip I took many pictures which you can see after the text. Paris is the capital of France and one of the biggest cities in Europe together with London and Istanbul. Around 10 million people live in the urban area, which also makes it the economical hotspot of France. La Defence is the place where the most international businesses are settled. Most lower and middle class people from Paris travel by metro, because it is the fastest and cheapest way to get anywhere around the city. There are metro stations everywhere, so you can go anywhere in a second. Paris attracts millions of tourists every year with their hotspots like the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomph and the Champs Elysees. The climate is approximately the same as ours, but on average a lot more people are Catholic than in the Netherlands. Why did I go there? Me and my parents do a city trip almost every year. They had been to Paris already 2 times before we went this time. Furthermore, Greet had never been to Paris, but planned to go there with her husband. Unfortunately, he had cancer in his legs and wasn’t able to go on a city trip anymore. He died in September 2004, and Greet didn’t have anyone to go to Paris with anymore. Th at is why we went as well. Research The Sacre Coeur and the neighbourhood called Montmartre are one of the places we visited. The Sacre Coeur was built to honour de death of the French-German war from 1870-1871. The French lost and built this basilique on top of the hill Montmartre. The building was finished in 1914 just before the First World War started. It is a catholic church like almost all others in Paris. The Neighbourhood Montmartre surrounding it is also known as the artists district. On a little square in the middle of the neighbourhood most artists come together and show off their skills. They will try to let tourists pay far too much money for their work, because most of the time they are pretty naive. The Moulin Rouge was opened in 1889, which is a long time ago. Moulin Rouge means the Red Mill in English which portrays the mill on top of the building. It is situated in the red light district of Paris, which fits to its shows with half-naked ladies and sexy dancers. Every year the Moulin Rouge attracts thousands of tourists who would like to see the expensive show( over 100 Euros for just 1 seat).
