CA 6 Visit to Coventry
General Information
Coventry is a city in the United Kingdom and is situated in the East Midlands. Is has always
been a very industrial city with especially a lot of car
manufacturers. Unfortunately, most of these factories have
closed down and moved somewhere else. Also a lot of them
have gone bankrupted, because British cars weren’t as good as
German, Korean, Japanese or French cars. There are a lot of old
buildings in the centre of Coventry, but the city was bombed in
the Second World War by the Germans, so some building were
destroyed or partially destroyed. Nowadays Coventry is still a
mostly industrial city. There is also a well known university with
a lot of students, so it has become a student city.
Why did I go to Coventry
I went to Coventry on a Sunday during my International Language and Work experience with
the Bosch company in Worcester. At first I wanted to go to Birmingham with my host family,
but they told me that it wasn’t a interesting city, and really modern without any nice
buildings or museums. It was just over an hour drive from Worcester so that is why we went
there.
Research
When we went to Coventry, we first walked around the city and went to the bombed
cathedral in the centre. It was built around 1400, which makes it very old. It was bombed by
the Germans during World War 2, but the people of Coventry tried to forget and even
forgive the Germans. That is mainly because the generation now can’t do anything about it
and are not to blame. After our visit to the cathedral we went to the main square and on the
way there you could see some magnificent traditional black and white buildings which
reminded me of Shakespeare’s time. After the small moment of shopping and sightseeing
we got ourselves something to eat and went to the Coventry Transport museum. The
museum was focused on British vehicles, mainly Jaguars. Some of those were really old and
beautiful, but there were also some pretty new and quick ones which gave a nice twist on
the visit. Next to these expensive cars, there were also some old Bentleys , Aston Martins
and Land Rovers. The best thing about the museum were the two supersonic cars. They both
had the land speed record in their hands and one of them even has it today. They made a
simulator of the fastest one, in
