Brandy: Yes, this year I was elected as the new vice president at the River Ridge Association of Fine Arts. I’m excited to bring in new blood. I’m working on rebuilding the website to be more user-friendly and possibly changing the meeting time to allow more people (a broader art audience) to attend. Every other month starting in March we’ll open it up to an evening meeting. I’ll also be working on getting in more shows to make it worthwhile for those who want to get their art out there more. M.J.: Why do you think the arts are so important to a community? Brandy: I don’t think the impact the arts have on a community can really be measured. I believe it to be incredibly important and I was excited to see the growing acceptance of the arts in the Inland Northwest when I moved here. Outside of just beautification, art tells a story of the community. Its diversity, pride, and overall well being are reflected in the art found. One of the things I always look for when I’m traveling is the murals. It’s a quick way to read a town. M.J.: Well, now I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled when I travel! So, what can us regular Spokanites do to help support the arts? Brandy: Show appreciation for the arts and start early. We need to fund programs for art in schools. Have art programs not only available but accessible to all children. There have been so many studies linking the arts to improved academic performance especially in science and math, emotional development, social awareness, and critical thinking. I hope that as my brand grows, I’ll be able to do more. M.J.: Where do you see yourself (your brand) in five years? Brandy: A big goal of mine is to open a place with studio space for artists to rent as well as classroom space. I’d really love to start having classes available for children and community space for folks to hold shows there — kind of an all-around gathering space for the arts.
