Matt and Kelly Austinof Grosgrain Vineyards
harken back to wine from Jura , France , whereby the original funky natural wines would be buried in amphora or clay pots , with the wine in them on the skins , giving them a unique profile . We get just a whisper of that in this wine but in the cleanest of versions — followed by citrus notes , leading to wildflowers and a very distinctive hay / straw note , ending on stone fruits with great framing acids .

Next is the 2019 Domaine Magdalena Lil ’ Mag . This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain is the love child of Maggie and Christophe Hedges . Made in an almost “ Nuevo ” style this is much lighter in color and only 11 percent abv . It ’ s meant to be imbibed any time but especially on the patio of a warm summer day . This wine has the essence of Cabernet but is much lighter and more playful and is drop dead gorgeous when chilled down . Domaine Magdalena is the first certified biodynamic ( with Hedges of course ) in Washington State ! And I love their biodynamic spirit as a tenet of their craft .

Biodynamic wine
Biodynamic farmers view their farms as living , breathing , interconnected organisms . These farmers follow rigorous standards to ensure that the farm nourishes , rather than hurts , the earth . They use a lowintervention strategy which includes no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers , no additives , minimal sulfites , and only native yeast . The vineyards are tended according to lunar cycles and embrace biodiversity .
