S $150.00 SPACE IS LIMITED pokane Arts hosted the first Meet Up at the Terrain Gallery, a visual art gallery inside the Washington Cracker building, where Terrain hosts monthly exhibits. The space is also available for other interactive art projects and interventions, as well as performances that can be booked in the gallery space or in the larger adjacent event space. The topic of Valuing Your Work encouraged artists to consider both the broad ways they view and value their own work and time, and also covered nitty-gritty tips and unique approaches to pricing their work. As visual artist and Saranac Artist Project member Chris Tyllia shared, “Don’t forget about the years, sometimes decades of practice, learning and evolving your work. That time has some value; don’t just charge for materials and frames.” Subsequent events took place at The Bartlett, an all-ages music venue that in addition to hosting a stellar lineup of intimate music shows, also serves as a performance venue for a wide range of events including improv shows, spoken word competition, book releases, and fashion shows. Bartlett co-owner (and Spokane Arts Commissioner) Karli Ingersoll spoke to attendees of the July Artist Meet Up about what she looks for when people reach out to her about booking a show at her venue, “Have a social media presence, even if you only have one follower on Instagram, at least that shows me you’re trying to put yourself out there and will be able to work to co-promote your show.” Social Media was the focus at the September Artist Meet Up at the Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University, where discussions included the ways social media can help build connections within an artist community, serve as a platform for sharing and selling work, but also be a deterrent to actually getting work done! The downtown Spokane Public Library, which serves as both a visual art exhibition space and a performance and event space, and Saranac Art Projects, an artist cooperative, round out the list of Artist Meet Up venues for 2019. In the first six months of the program, Spokane-area artists were able to learn from five important and diverse local venues and start building the relationships that are so important for an engaged and connected art community. Some of these topics will spur more in-depth professional development workshops and events in 2020 and we’re excited to see where this program grows next year!
