ARTIST MEET UP SERIES W hat happens when you gather artists, of all disciplines and at different stages in their careers, together in one space? They find an opportunity for genuine connection, learning, and engagement. That’s the goal behind Artist Meet Ups, a Spokane Arts professional development and networking series. Mika Maloney PROGRAM MANAGER, SPOKANE ARTS Although the professional mentorships of creative professionals are often built with people working in the same medium or genre, there are many areas where artists can gain helpful new perspectives learning from artists working in a different discipline. For example, the literary community’s insight on critiquing work-in-progress through workshops might be helpful to artists in other disciplines, like visual art. Many musicians understand the power of social media as a tool for promotion and connection, and their experience can benefit other performing artists. Not to mention that every creative has to tackle the question of balancing work, art, and life. Last winter, Spokane Arts surveyed local artists about their professional development goals, challenges, and interests. Several needs were echoed by artists across disciplines and at different stages of their careers — the need for more opportunities for casual networking and professional connections, the desire for structured conversations around broad topics, and curiosity about how to show or perform at Spokane’s many venues. The Artist Meet Up series was created in direct response to each of those needs.
