The amber tones of fall have settled into the dulcet melodies of winter , bringing with it the holidays that beg family and friends to gather round in celebration . Folks are fervently – some maybe frantically – finalizing gifts for their loved ones in preparation for the culminating celebration of the season . It is the season of giving .
In that spirit , we bring you this beautiful holiday issue and ask that if you appreciate what we do , you might remember us in your year-end giving . We are working hard to secure the new Art Chowder nonprofit and would greatly appreciate your consideration .

In this issue we bring you the stories of artists and expose you to new artistic endeavors . Preview the Walla Walla Plein Air Event that you might want to add to your 2024 calendar . Read about artist Mallory Battista as told by Melody Fyre . Sona Uradnik introduces you to the “ Memory House ” that is the Northwest Dance Project . Matthew Kincanon shares indigenous filmmaker Misty Shipman ’ s pursuit of sharing hope , while Sue Eller brings you the Celtic resonance of the Gothard Sisters .
This issue also includes an introduction by Cam Reid to Portland ’ s Fish-San , serving what some Portland State University students declare is the best sushi in the region . You ’ ll also enjoy the story of artist Bill Garibyan ’ s fulfillment of a lifelong dream in our Soul column . No issue would be complete without the historical arts insights of Tom Quinn and his cartoon that is always a peek inside the artistic life .
This has been an incredibly challenging and fulfilling year for the team at Art Chowder . Transitioning to nonprofit means more opportunities and partnerships for supporting and promoting arts and artisans of the Northwest , but it has come with its hurdles . We look forward to gaining momentum in 2024 and are excited to bring you innovative new programs to engage in and learn through .
We thank you for your support and encouragement and wish you all the happiest of holidays . Be kind . Show love . Embrace possibility .
