Sweet wine drinkers take heart.  My experience suggests that if sweet wine makes you the happiest, you may have a super-sensitive palate to which the bitterness of black coffee or deep red wine are like bullies on the palate’s playground.  Pro tip: Similar white wines will list alcohol by volume at 11.5 percent or less — the lower percentage, the sweeter the wine — they are usually labelled as Riesling, Gewürztraminer or Muscat. Dry white wines, by contrast, like Barnard Griffin’s delicious Albarino (barnardgriffin.com - $20) play off of flavor differently — often extending flavors from one’s plate to last longer or seem more intense (think water after jalapenos).   May | June 2020 43
