Artist Michele Mokrey Founder of New Moon Art Gallery
With many years of service to the arts community with her art galleries— The Artist Tree, Manic Moon and More, and now as the founder of the Artist Co-op, New Moon Gallery, Michele Mokrey continues to be a much-loved gallerist in Spokane and has contributed to the success of numerous artists. She brings the perspective of being a gifted artist herself to the relationships she has developed with her artist partners.
What lead you to become an artist and what disciplines do you practice?
My grandmother was a very creative person and some of my earliest memories were of watching her sew on her old Singer hand-crank and foot-pedal sewing machine. Not only did she make beautifully embellished dresses for me with antique lace and delicate embroidery, but she also made matching doll dresses with exacting details. I watched while she sewed and played with her lace, yarn, button, bead, and bauble collections that she kept in a series of large Chinese baskets. Although my interest in the textile arts did not happen until later in my life, I have to say, it was my grandmother who planted the seeds that would sprout into my passion for the fiber arts. As a fiber artist, I create wall hangings and wearable art accessories and enjoy creating new ways to embellish the pieces that I create.
