service ,” he said of the experience . “ They all graduated and went on . I went back to a different school atmosphere .”
At that time , he was studying to be an illustrator . He chose that path instead of fine art because he could make money right away if he could find work . Fine art was a whole different ball game . As Krogle put it , “ You spend time creating it , but it doesn ’ t sell itself . You have to become a businessman and promote yourself and your art .”
The illustration lab instructor , who he got to know quite well , counseled him by confiding that he was spending a lot of his own time trying to get work through developing his portfolio to show art directors . He didn ’ t say it outright , but he let Krogle know it wasn ’ t necessary to have an art degree to work as an illustrator . Developing and showing a portfolio was key . Of course , his folks wanted him to get a degree . “ I wanted to get a degree ,” he confessed , “ but I found out I really didn ’ t need one to succeed .”
