huck says, “I started with abstracts,
just mixing colors and shapes that I
liked. Sometimes these turned into
landscapes, so I tried a few landscapes
from references.” Chuck’s inspiration
is varied but he likes Clyfford Still.
(For Spokane art history aficionados,
Clyfford Still painted here during the
Great Depression and was part of the
Spokane Art Center funded by the Works
Progress Administration Federal Art
Project.) He said, “For me, it’s Clyfford
Still. We’ve visited the Clyfford Still
Museum in Denver. As for landscapes,
I was first drawn to the grass painter
Charlie Burk. On a trip to Victoria,
Canada we saw the work of Emily Carr.”
In the past few years, Chuck has taken
painting classes from Katie Frey,
Terry Lee and through the Spokane
Community College Act 2 Program.
